• Telephony The reason why fixing your iPhone is now cheaper

  • Gadgets We tested the iPhone 14, few changes and four figures in a very difficult year

It is not a secret that the

camera

is the feature that makes the difference between mobile phones.

Other features have long been comparable, if not the same, between phones in the same range.

Many use the same processor and screens and offer similar memory options.

Saving the loading speed

-perhaps the other great differentiating element-, it is the quality of the photos and the number of lenses that really make or break a terminal.

This means that the new star of the Samsung catalogue, the

Galaxy S23 Ultra,

had a lot at stake with the change to a new sensor.

The phone, announced last week, is the most advanced and largest of the

three new Galaxy S

coming to the catalog this year, and the good news is that the camera seems to deliver.

We at PIXEL had the opportunity to spend some time last week testing the phone in various conditions and with different modes of use.

At first glance, the Galaxy S23 Ultra looks pretty similar to last year's equivalent model, but there are a few small cosmetic changes that suit it.

The

curvature at the edges of the screen,

for example, has become almost testimonial, which eliminates glare and chromatic aberrations and prevents accidental touches in some cases.

100% QUALCOMM

Inside the device, this year, there is also a

Qualcomm processor.

Other years Samsung used in some territories, such as Europe, a version of its own processors, the

Exynos,

with equivalent performance, but it seems that finally, in 2023, the company has chosen to standardize the experience.

As you might expect, the processor of choice is the most powerful, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, but it is a

special version optimized

for Samsung phones that is slightly more powerful than what is found in other high-end phones, mainly Why is the refresh rate increased?

For practical purposes there are few differences, but the S23 Ultra moves with ease in practically all situations.

As was the case with previous versions, the

Ultra is the phone that takes the baton from the Note range

and has an integrated

S-Pen,

a digital stylus with which to write or draw freehand on the screen.

Although the

6.8-inch screen

is spacious, it's a somewhat constrained experience compared to using it on a tablet.

200 MEGAPIXELS

The fundamental thing in this new phone is, as we said before, the camera.

Samsung has integrated a new

200-megapixel

sensor into the main lens that has left us with very good impressions.

As usual in mobile phones, photos, by default, are not saved in 200 megapixels.

The phone uses

various photoreceptors

on the sensor to create each final pixel in a

12-megapixel image.

This allows more light and detail to be captured and overall, the results are very good.

But for those who enjoy photography, it is also possible to shoot at

50 megapixel

or 200 megapixel resolution, both in compressed and RAW format, and it is in these modes that we have found the best results.

200 Megapixels is perhaps a bit extreme (it takes a second for the phone to process the image) but 50 is a good middle ground that produces

good images with sharpness and excellent optical quality.

The sensor also resolves

night scenes

and cropping in portrait mode photography very well.

It is supported by two 3x and 10x telephoto lenses with 10 megapixel resolution and, together, zoom levels of 30x and even 100x are possible.

100x is excessive and the results lose too much quality, although the Ultra does a decent job with stabilization, but the

30x zoom is quite competent.

Samsung has also improved the video quality and now allows you to capture 8K video at 30 frames per second.

In general, shooting with the Galaxy S23 Ultra leaves a very good feeling.

It's a fast camera and packed with advanced features for those who enjoy mobile photography.

The

telephoto (or ultra-wide) lenses aren't as quality

as the main sensor, but the quality of the new 200-megapixel more than makes up for these issues.

The front camera has not changed but the new Qualcomm processor achieves a better quality HDR, both in photo and video.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra can be reserved now at a price

starting at 1,409 euros with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage.

It is sold in four colors (white, black, purple and green) with some exclusive editions available only through the Samsung website.

It will be available from February 17.
