An operator of an illegal cram school who repeatedly assaulted academy students while receiving high tuition fees worth an average of 15 million won per month has been sentenced to prison.

According to the legal community on the 25th, Detective 16 of the Seoul Central District Court (presiding judge Kim Tae-gyun) sentenced Mr. A to 1 year and 6 months in prison for violating the Act on the Establishment, Operation and Management of Schools and the Child Welfare Act. He was ordered to complete a child abuse treatment program for 3 hours and to be restricted from employment at a child-related institution for 3 years.

Mr. A is accused of habitually assaulting students who pay high tuition fees and take classes under the pretext of discipline.

From October 2019 to August 2021, he taught the US online school (home education) process at an officetel in Seoul, receiving tuition of 45 million won per student per quarter.

However, it was revealed that the training center run by Mr. A was an unreported illegal academy, and the high tuition fee of 15 million won per month was also operated without complying with the related reporting regulations.

In response, the judge pointed out that "the crime is serious because the crime is repeated over a long period of time."

However, he explained the reason for the sentence, saying, "The fact that the defendant confessed to all the crimes and that he had no criminal record of the same type was taken into account."

Meanwhile, Mr. A is known to have appealed against the ruling.
