It's done: Microsoft is irresistibly approaching OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT.

Artificial intelligence is upsetting the balance of the tech behemoths and it is Microsoft which, by expanding its partnership with the creator of ChatGPT for "several billion" dollars, seems to be taking the lead in the race for new technologies.

In early January, the

Wall Street Journal

reported that OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, was in talks to sell some of its capital at a multi-billion dollar valuation to Microsoft.

Financial details have not yet been disclosed, but the merger has been completed between the two companies.

According to the specialized site Semafor, the financing conditions foresee that Microsoft obtains 75% of the profits of OpenAI until the recovery of its initial investment, once the company has found a way to make ChatGPT profitable - It is estimated that OpenAI loses 100 000 dollars a day, or about 3 million a month by offering its conversation tool with artificial intelligence to the general public.

The agreement between OpenAI and Microsoft was smoothly negotiated according to some.

CEO since 2014, Satya Nadella intends to evolve Microsoft thanks to this acquisition of OpenAI, founded by billionaire Elon Musk (who has since retired) and investor Sam Altman.

For comparison, Google bought DeepMind in 2014 for over $600 million,

In this next phase of our partnership with @OpenAI, we will deliver the best AI infrastructure, models, and toolchain for customers to safely and responsibly build and run their applications on Azure.

Create images from a sentence

Microsoft had already committed a billion in 2019 to make OpenAI work properly and three years later the company launched impressive tools: Codex is an AI capable of translating natural language into computer code;

DALL-E 2 allows images to be created from a sentence given by the user, ChatGPT is the revelation of the end of the year 2022, it is a conversation tool capable of responding to an immense variety of questions, to correct code or even to write whole texts “in the manner of” -explanations here-... and it is even more recently that Vall-E proposes from a few seconds of sounds to imitate n any style of voice.

The spillover into the public domain of artificial intelligence capabilities never seems set to stop.

Surprised there isn't more chatter around VALL-E

This new model by @Microsoft can generate speech in any voice after only hearing a 3s sample of that voice 🤯

"Artificial intelligence will reinvent everything you do with Windows"

Because investing in artificial intelligence is a bet on the future and it is also the way to make current tools more efficient, more “intelligent”.

ChatGPT is already a revolution and a success with the public, but its operation still remains very confidential, even reserved for insiders.

Microsoft will take advantage of the capabilities of this intelligent machine to improve the user experience of its software customers and make the capabilities of this AI (artificial intelligence) “all public”.

During CES 2023 in Las Vegas, Panos Panay in charge of the Windows department at Microsoft said: “

Artificial intelligence will reinvent everything you do with Windows.

So, what better than a ChatGPT to help you write in Word, correct your syntax or spelling mistakes?

Your Outlook mailbox will become “smart” when it allows you to pre-fill your messages, or when it anticipates what you are going to send to your correspondents (as Gmail already does remarkably well).

For Microsoft, this acquisition is the way to develop, even reinvent, a whole set of sometimes dated software.

Some have smiled at this return of Microsoft to the old-fashioned image: could it be the return of Clippy in a more insightful way?

Will Excel tables be less intimidating?

From March 2023, ChatGPT will be integrated into the Microsoft search engine: Bing.

And there too, it is already a technical boost to the Google search engine which will have to retaliate.

According to the

New York Times

, since the arrival of ChatGPT a code red, a maximum alert sign, has been activated among Google developers.

The balance of power between the tech giants could change.

Microsoft is 48 years old and is arguably the most well positioned company in big tech for the next decade:

- Most diversified revenue stream

- Azure is clear #2 in cloud market

- In talks to acquire 49% of OpenAI and adding AI to multiple products

Super impressive.

Because rather than a cold search engine that references links or content, it would be appropriate dialogue and suggestions, with complete sentences that cite the source of the answer, that one would obtain in response.

For optimists, it would also be a good way out of the spiral of

fake news

and other trolls.

Or simply waste less time on the web...

“

Ensure AI is used ethically and responsibly for the benefit of all

 ”

The conversation tool ChatGPT answered us on this last optimistic and ethical point thus: “

AI ethics is a subfield of ethics that focuses on the ethical questions raised by AI and systems. automated.

It examines the consequences of AI on individuals and societies and strives to develop principles to guide the design, development and use of AI.

Common ethical issues in AI ethics include liability for harm caused by automated systems, transparency and traceability of automated decisions, and risks of discrimination and misinformation.

It is important to continue to explore the ethical issues related to AI, as it impacts our daily lives and our societies, and may have even more in the future, so it is important to ensure that the AI is used ethically and responsibly for the benefit of all.

What is optimism?
