Last year

Apple

launched

the second generation of processors for Mac, the M2.

This chip is the heart of the latest MacBook Air and the entry-level model of the professional range, the MacBook pro, but until now it has not made the leap to any other company computer.

Today, Apple has announced the third computer that will use it, the new

Mac Mini,

and also new versions of the M2,

the M2 Pro and M2 Max

, which will be the processors of a new generation of MacBook Pro.

The M2 Pro and Max are built using a slightly more advanced process than the M1 used, but still based on 5 nanometers, so the jump in raw power isn't nearly as dramatic over the previous version.

The M2 Pro has 40 billion transistors, 20% more than the M1 Pro. This can translate into a significant performance boost in some specific applications, especially those that can take advantage of multiple cores simultaneously.

Apple, for example, ensures that when working in Photoshop the M2 Pro are 40% faster than the M1 Pro and 80% faster than the Intel Core i9 used by the latest MacBook Pro with Intel processors.

The new processors

may also be equipped with more memory

(in M processors the memory is integrated into the chip itself) and graphics power.

The M2 Pro can be configured with 19 computing graphics cores, three more than the M1 Pro, and 48GB of memory.

The M2 Max can have up to 38 of these cores and up to 96 GB of memory (basically two M2 Pro joined).

New Macs and MacBooks

The first computers to use these processors will be available next week and Apple will, for the first time, bring the Pro processors to the Mac Mini, its most affordable computer.

The new Mac Mini can now be configured with M2 processors

that not only come with more and better processing cores, but also offer much higher memory bandwidth and a larger area dedicated to processing AI and machine learning routines. .

Most notably, however, is that the Mac Mini is now also cheaper.

The basic model with eight CPU cores and 10 graphics processing cores now starts at 719 euros.

Also, for the first time,

the Mac Mini can be equipped with a processor from the Pro range

, which makes the computer a much more interesting machine for professional users who do not need a laptop, and who until now only had Mac Studio -more expensive- or Mac Pro -much more expensive still- as an option.

This model starts at 1,569 euros.

The M2 Pro and M2 Max will also be present, as expected, in a new generation of MacBook Pro that has also been announced today and will hit stores next week.

It is

an evolution of the MacBook Pro with M1 Pro and M1 Max that the company had in its catalog

.

Thanks to the new processors, they can be configured with more memory and are, as we have already pointed out, more powerful.

but aside from the raw power, there are also some surprises.

The new MacBook Pros, for example, are compatible with Wi-Fi 6E, a new generation of much faster Wi-Fi networks, and a new HDMI connection that supports 8K monitors for the first time.

They are also the MacBook pro with greater autonomy.

The model equipped with M2 Pro is capable of offering up to 22 hours of operation away from the plug.

As in the last generation, these computers can be chosen with a 14- or 16-inch screen.

Prices start at 2,449 euros in the first case and 3,049 euros in the second.
