Many people think seriously about the low birth rate, but the crisis of extinction is getting more and more serious, especially as the local population is rapidly decreasing.

Jeollanam-do, where 13 out of 22 cities and provinces are included in areas of concern for extinction, is paying unprecedented subsidies for childbirth.

According to Jeollanam-do, among the 22 cities and counties, Gangjin-gun has the largest amount of subsidies for childbirth, with a whopping 50.4 million won, the highest in Jeollanam-do as well as in the country.

Gangjin-gun pays 600,000 won per month from birth to 7 years of age, a total of 50.4 million won in childcare allowance.

The county introduced the parental allowance system in October of last year when the number of babies born, which was around 470 in 2010, plummeted to around 100 the year before last.

Following Gangjin-gun, Jeonnam, Goheung-gun was found to pay 10.8 million won for the first child, Jindo-gun 10 million won, and Boseong-gun 6 million won.

An official from South Jeolla Province said, "In a situation where the extinction crisis is getting serious, local governments have no choice but to increase the birth rate even by investing huge budgets."
