In the past month, two children have died after being hit by a car near an elementary school.

We have looked at what measures are needed to prevent such accidents from recurring in the school zone created to protect our children.

Reporter Lee Kang will tell you.

The accident in front of an elementary school in Gangnam, Seoul on the 2nd of last month was caused by the obvious fault of the drunk driver and the fact that there were no sidewalks for children even though it was a school zone.

Residents objected to building a sidewalk, saying the road was narrow.

The situation around an elementary school in Seongdong-gu was similar until recently.

[Elementary student A: Every time you go, you have to look back and look at the cars before you go.]

[Elementary student B: There was a thin sidewalk block here, and I stepped on it.]

But now, a school road with a safety fence, a sidewalk, has been built.

Residents proposed 'making sidewalks' in the Seoul Business Competition, secured a budget of 300 million won for 2019, and when the roads were narrow and the land for schools and kindergartens was used, the person in charge of the district office stepped forward.

[Na Eun-wook/Seongdong-gu Office Transportation Specialist: If you really need it, buy (land) as much as you need.

It's 3 billion won.

(Kindergarten) I have to convince the director and meet the school again, and I think I have met about 40 to 50 times.]

After 2 years of persuasion, I was able to use the school land, and the construction started the year before last and the sidewalk was completed.

[Jung Joon-young/A Elementary School 4th Grade: I'm comfortable.

Grandmothers and grandfathers attend without worry, and many school children attend.] In

front of another nearby elementary school, the road 300m long and the surroundings are all yellow.

You can tell at once that the road, boundary stone, and fence are children's protection zones.

[Na Eun-wook/Seongdong-gu Office Traffic Specialist: Children act unexpectedly.

In order to create a way for adults to be careful, you have to keep creating new things.

That's why I also tried yellow.]

There are also places that use information technology.

In front of an elementary school in Anyang, Gyeonggi-do.

It projects people coming out of the side alley, which is a blind spot, on the electric signboard in front of the driver in advance.

It is connected to the crime prevention CCTV video already installed near the school.

Starting from the coming semester, we plan to show the movement of students on all four electronic display boards during commute to and from school.

[Yoon Jeong-ho/Anyang City Hall Smart Business Team Assistant: (Why did you do this?) It seems that there is a shortage even if you want to overdo it about child safety.]

In 2021, there were 496 traffic accidents involving children in school zones nationwide.

In the three places we covered, there was nothing after the countermeasures were prepared.
