The Madrid exhibition year begins loaded with novelties for all tastes, and also includes

the commemoration of two important anniversaries

.

On the one hand, April 8, 2023 will mark the 50th anniversary of the death of

Pablo Picasso

in Mougins (France), while in August it will be the centenary of the death of

Joaquín Sorolla

in Madrid.

Two anniversaries that will bring different tributes in various museums in the city.

In the case of the universally recognized artist from Malaga, a multitude of museums, galleries and cultural spaces will host exhibitions and activities under the

Picasso Celebration 1973-2023 program,

backed by renowned institutions in Europe and the United States.

Some shows have already come to light (and with enormous success) before the end of 2022, such as

Picasso and Chanel

, which examines the relationship between the painter and the French designer and the influence of one on the other in their innovative creations.

For those who have not seen it, you still have the chance to do so until January 15 at the

Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza.

The Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, the Prado Museum or the Reina Sofía Museum, among others, will host exhibitions of the painter from Malaga throughout the year.

The Picasso and Sorolla exhibitions will coexist with other essentials for all kinds of tastes.

We propose some of the most interesting that all art lovers cannot miss in these first six months of the year in Madrid.

Sorolla through the light

Walk by the sea, by Sorolla.

It is one of the most anticipated (and different) exhibitions of the Valencian painter, which can be seen in the Genoa Halls of

the Royal Palace

on the occasion of the centenary of his death.

This is an immersive exhibition that for the first time combines original works by Sorolla (some unpublished) with digital recreations and sensory experiences through light, color and movement.

The tour includes a virtual reality experience that takes the visitor back to the times of Sorolla (late 19th and early 20th centuries).

The exhibition is curated by Consuelo Luca de Tena, former director of the Sorolla Museum, and Blanca Pons-Sorolla, the painter's great-granddaughter and specialist in his work.

Starting in February

.

Leonora Carrington

First retrospective in Spain of this Mexican painter born in Great Britain and considered one of the most relevant artists of Surrealism.

The exhibition, at the

Mapfre Foundation

(Paseo de Recoletos, 23), follows the career of this artist (also a writer), a central figure in the development of 20th-century modern art and an eccentric personality, from her first drawings to her late work.

From February 9 to May 7.

Lucian Freud.

New insights

'Girl with Roses' by Lucian Freud.

The

Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum

(Paseo del Prado, 8) is hosting a retrospective dedicated to the figure and work of Lucian Freud on the occasion of the centenary of his birth.

Coming from the National Gallery in London, the exhibition of one of the most significant European artists of the 20th century consists of fifty works that represent the seven decades of the career of the British painter and engraver.

Freud's painting, incisive, subversive and sometimes inappropriate, was always dedicated to representing the human body and portraying contemporary man.

From February 14 to June 18.

Joana Biarnés Madrid: fashion at street level

Reflection of the evolution of fashion and society in a time of transcendental changes, between the 60s and the early 70s, the exhibition will also present what the Spanish capital was like, with its streets, its neighborhoods and its inhabitants, something very common in the creations of the artist.
