As reported, this heavy snowfall is mainly concentrated in the west coast.

The so-called 'lake effect' was created when the cold air heading toward Korea passed over the warm sea, and reporter Han Seung-hwan explains in detail.

Currently, cold air of minus 15 degrees is coming from the north over our country.

By the way, the water temperature of the west coast is relatively warm above 10 degrees.

When the temperature difference between the top and bottom is large, the air below rises and forms a snow cloud.

This is the so-called 'Lake Effect'.

Normally, clouds are formed when there is a difference of more than 15 degrees, but now, when there is a difference of about 25 degrees, clouds have developed more explosively.

Strong winds blowing from the lower atmosphere are also the cause.

A strong wind of around 20m per second is blowing from 1.5km above the West Sea, and when a large amount of water vapor and heat flow in with this wind, snow clouds develop greatly up to 3km or more.

The reason clouds developed over the West Sea affect inland is because of the direction of the wind.

Low pressure is located in the north and high pressure is located in the west, causing west-northwest winds to blow inland.

Due to the nature of the wind direction, the time to pass over the sea is longer than that of the north wind, so snow clouds develop more.

Heavy snowfall of up to 30cm or more is predicted on the west coast of Chungcheongnam-do, Jeonbuk, and western Jeonnam until the day after tomorrow (24th).

Tomorrow will be the coldest day this year.

The morning temperature in Seoul recorded minus 14 degrees and the perceived temperature recorded minus 22 degrees.

The cold is expected to continue through the weekend and return to normal temperatures by next Monday.
