On the 2nd, a 9-year-old elementary school student was hit and killed by a drunk driving vehicle in the children's protection area, also known as the school zone, of Eonbuk Elementary School in Gangnam-gu, Seoul.

In the place where the accident occurred, the road was about 4 to 5 meters wide, and there was no sidewalk, and speed cameras were not properly installed, making it very vulnerable to accidents.

When SBS reporters intensively inspected the children's protection zones in Seoul, they found that there were frequent vehicle traffic, but there were many places that did not have the minimum safety facilities such as sidewalks or safety fences.

Earlier this year, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced comprehensive measures to "zero" the safety blind spots in child protection areas by the end of the year.

The main goal was to install 300 additional speed enforcement cameras in 1,735 child protection areas in the city and expand the 20km/h speed limit area, but SBS checked and found that the target and results were different.

Today (7th), 8 News will tell you in detail about the reality and countermeasures of the 'School Zone', which still has dangerous elements, 3 years after the enforcement of the Minsik Act, which stipulates increased punishment for traffic accidents in child protection zones.
