More than fifty years after the American astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin had set foot on the ground of the Moon, it is now a question of creating dwellings there.

But what will it be used for?

Astrophysicist Éric Lagadec expresses his caution: "As a scientist, I don't think there's really any major interest in sending human beings there since you can do very beautiful things with robots... and that it costs much less”.

“I like to call it the orbit contest”

So what drives this project?

“Geopolitical ambitions that go far beyond the scientific aspect, regrets Éric Lagadec.

In the 1960s, against the backdrop of the Cold War, the Americans wanted to walk on the Moon before the Soviets… Today, they want to settle there before the Chinese.

I like to call it the "orbit contest", because it's really a matter of pride to arrive first.

OUR “MOON” FILE

“What all astronauts say is that rising above the Earth allows what is called the 'overview effect';

that is to say that when we have seen the blue planet from space, we understand how fragile it is and that it must be protected.

We therefore need space missions to "monitor the Earth".

But sending people to the Moon won't help, whereas sending observation satellites, our climate, in particular, yes: it's super important!
