At 8:27 am today, the Korea Meteorological Administration announced that an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.1 occurred in an area 11 km northeast of Goesan-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do.

This earthquake is the largest earthquake that occurred on the Korean Peninsula this year, and with a magnitude of 4.0 or higher, it is the first in about 10 months since the earthquake that occurred in the waters near Seogwipo, Jeju, in December last year.

The epicenter of today's earthquake is 36.88 degrees north latitude and 127.89 degrees east longitude.

Instrument seismicity was measured as a maximum of 5 in Chungbuk.

Instrument seismic intensity is the degree of shaking calculated by seismometer observations, and 5 refers to 'a level at which almost everyone feels the vibration, dishes and windows are broken, and unstable objects fall'.

By 11 am, the fire department received a total of 142 calls from all over the country saying they felt an earthquake.

The Fire Department and Chungcheongbuk-do said that there has been no damage to property or people reported or identified as a result of the earthquake.

However, there have been reports of rockfalls in Yeonpung-myeon, Goesan-gun, and we are investigating.

President Yoon Seok-yeol ordered a quick assessment of earthquake damage and an immediate inspection for abnormalities in social infrastructure such as electricity and communications.

The Ministry of Public Administration and Security, which started the first stage of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters at 8:30 am immediately after the earthquake, convened an emergency situation inspection meeting a while ago.

The Ministry of Public Administration and Security said that there has been no damage so far and urged them to respond according to the seismic action guidelines in case of additional earthquakes.
