Korean Air has decided to abolish the name 'stewardess', which means female flight attendants, for the first time in the domestic airline industry.
Currently, inside Korean Air, female cabin attendants are called stewardess and men are called stewards.
Korean Air announced through an in-house notice that from next month, the names of male and female cabin attendants will be merged into 'Flight Attendant'.
It is the first time since its establishment in 1969 that crew names are unified.
Regarding the analysis of whether the names were combined to eliminate gender discrimination, a Korean Air official explained that 'the rank system was tailored to unify the system because there are more employee-level flight attendants than other jobs in the company'.
As Korean Air, the eldest of domestic airlines, unifies the names of flight attendants, it is attracting attention whether this movement will spread throughout the airline industry.
