Recently, there was an unfortunate accident that resulted in death due to poisoning with carbon monoxide leaking from a boiler.

When the weather was getting colder, we found the vulnerable and checked the boiler condition, and there were dangers everywhere.

We checked a gas boiler together with a local government in a multi-family house in Seoul where an elderly person with reduced mobility lives.

[Jinwoo Noh / Social Welfare Officer at Yangcheon-gu Office in Seoul: If (carbon monoxide) gas leaks, it will be a big deal, so I came out to check if there is a problem.]

[Elderly resident: I think the inspection was done (5 years ago) when I moved in here.]

The boiler and the flue joint should be covered with heat-resistant silicone and then all metal devices should be fixed, but the finish is not good.

[Ryu Jae-yoon / Korea Heat Management Construction Association: The (clip-type) peninsula that holds the flue is not filled right now, so I tightened it.]

Another oil boiler in another house does not have the last screw fastened, and combustion products are found in the flue.

Excessive build-up of these substances can block gas exhaust and cause carbon monoxide to leak through loose crevices or even lead to a fire.

Most of the casualties caused by gas boiler accidents in the past five years are caused by carbon monoxide poisoning, and loose or improperly installed exhaust connections accounted for over 80% of all accidents.

In particular, single-family houses or small houses, where regular boiler inspection is difficult, are exposed to the risk of accidents.

[Lee Young-joo/Professor, Department of Fire and Disaster Prevention, Seoul National University: In the case of a part with a pipe protruding to the outside, there are also cases where a bird builds a house on that side or a fallen leaf gets in there, so foreign substances get clogged.]

Vulnerable class residence It seems that active measures are needed, such as including boiler inspections in the public service area and installing gas alarms.
