A mother in her 30s who raised five young children in a house full of garbage was sentenced to probation at the first trial.
Some of the children were 7 months old.
Daegu District Court's 4th Criminal Division (Presiding Judge Dae-hyun Kim) was indicted on charges of neglecting to protect and nurture children, such as raising five children in an unsanitary environment where garbage was left unattended and not feeding them on time (abandonment and neglect of children under the Child Welfare Act) It was announced today (14th) that A (34) was sentenced to 4 months in prison and 1 year of probation.
He also ordered 80 hours of child abuse prevention training and a three-year restriction from employment in child-related organizations.
Mr. A is accused of raising children in an unsanitary environment without removing food waste and beer cans from his house located in Gyeongsan-si for about 7 months from September 2020 to April 2021.
He is also accused of neglect, such as not giving food on time and not washing.
The children were 7 months old, 19 months old, 2 years old, 4 years old, and 5 years old, respectively.
The court pointed out, "The lack of basic protection for the five children impedes their physical and emotional development, and the crime quality is not good considering that three of the children are infants under the age of three."
He explained the reason for the sentencing, "We took into account the fact that he committed the crime in a situation where his health deteriorated due to childbirth and he did not receive adequate help from his spouse for housework and child rearing."
