At midnight last week, the site of the Hyeonmoo missile accident that made the residents of Gangneung uneasy was revealed for the first time.

Earlier, the military authorities said that the missile fell near a golf course inside the military base, and the place where the propellant fell was in the middle of an oil warehouse where oil was stored.

Inside a military base in Gangneung.

The ground was deeply dug everywhere, and the grass fell out without a hitch.

The place where the Joint Chiefs of Staff initially said the missile had dropped was a golf course within a military base 1km away from the missile launch point.

However, as a result of on-site verification, the missile projectile fell in the middle of an oil tank containing hundreds of thousands of liters of oil, not near a golf course.

There was also a dormitory with soldiers about 100m away from the camel point, which almost led to a major accident.

The barbed wire inside the oil warehouse collapsed helplessly, and the grass and pine trees were burned black.

The military authorities explained that at around 11 o'clock on the evening of the 4th, the missile that was launched fell immediately after flying abnormally for a reason presumed to be a device defect, and the separated warhead did not explode and the propellant burned for about one minute.

[Lee Hyun-cheol / Commander of the 2nd Army Missile Brigade: I judged that the situation on the ground was urgent, and then I judged that the on-site safety measures were clear.

By the time our commander arrived at the scene, the propellant had already extinguished the fire and landed in a safe area.]

However, as criticism from local residents as well as from the National Assembly poured in, the National Assembly defense members belonging to the Democratic Party of Korea tried to visit the site on the 7th to find out the truth, but it was canceled due to the opposition of the military authorities.

After consultation, the site was released to the public, but as the camel site was confirmed to be different from what was originally known, the suspicion only increased.

Residents near the base are urging the formation of a special investigation committee of the National Assembly to conduct a transparent fact-finding investigation and to prepare measures to prevent recurrence.
