A man in his 30s who killed a passenger while driving at a speed of 137 km/h while intoxicated has been sentenced to imprisonment.

The 8th Criminal Division of the Gwangju District Court announced on the 4th that A (31), who was charged with violating the Special Act on Traffic Accident Handling and DUI under the Road Traffic Act, was sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison.

Mr. A was handed over to trial on the charge of causing the death of Mr. B (22), who was sitting in the backseat of my vehicle, in an accident while driving drunk on a road in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province at around 4:30 am on March 22.

At that time, while driving at a speed of 137 km/h on a road with a speed limit of 80 km/h, Mr. A made a left turn without slowing down and collided with an iron guard rail at the intersection.

B, who was thrown out of the vehicle in this accident, died at the scene.

As a result of the investigation, it was revealed that Mr. A caused this accident while driving about 3 km in a drunken state with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.069%.

It was confirmed that he had a history of being fined for drunk driving in 2020.

The judge said, "Speeding exceeding the speed limit and driving under the influence of alcohol resulted in the death of the victim in his early 20s. is inevitable,” he explained.

However, he explained the reason for the sentencing, saying, "We have taken into account the aspect of the damage caused by the victim's not wearing a seat belt."

On the other hand, according to Article 148-2 (penalty) of the Road Traffic Act, which 'aggravates' a driver who repeats drunk driving or refusal to take measurements, a person who commits two or more acts of drunk driving or refusal to take measurements will be sentenced to 2 to 5 years in prison or 10 million won. It is stipulated that a fine of ∼20 million won is imposed.
