Among the remains found at the site of the former Gwangju Prison, the identity of one district presumed to be missing at the time of May 18 has been revealed.

Mr. A, who lived in Hwasun, Jeollanam-do, left for Gwangju on May 24, 1980 and is known to be missing.

Based on the testimony of colleagues at the time, the government officially recognized Mr. A as a missing person related to the May 18 Democratization Movement.

[Gwangju Metropolitan City Officials: Because colleagues testified and were recognized in the investigation, when synthesizing other investigations, it is stated as 'Judgmented as missing in relation to the Gwangju Democratization Movement.']

However, when and under what circumstances Mr. Further details such as how it was reached have not been revealed.

The May 18 Fact Investigation Committee plans to conduct a detailed investigation after completing cross-verification of the remains of Mr. A.

It will also launch additional excavations to find victims who may be buried elsewhere.

The 5.18 groups emphasized that a thorough investigation should be carried out, saying that the suspicion of a dark burial, which had not been revealed for 42 years, turned out to be true.

[Jin-Tae Cho, Executive Director of the 5/18 Memorial Foundation: Because the dark burial is one of the most important tasks to find out the truth about May 18th.

This seems to be the first time.

In the future, I think the truth should be continuously investigated, including a full investigation.]

Currently, there are only 85 missing persons related to 5/18 that the government has recognized, and there are more than 150 missing persons who are not officially recognized due to lack of data.

It is noteworthy whether this investigation will reveal the truth of May, which has been hidden for 42 years.
