In our latitudes, Nissan essentially consists of the Qashqai, the everyday SUV that fits in front of every house.

The X-Trail, whose fan base is smaller but similarly loyal, used to be a bit squarer, but recently it was thought to be more cuddly.

Now in the fourth generation, both approach each other even more, the front with the two-part LED headlights invites confusion.

As usual, the big brother of the Qashqai offers up to seven seats and is therefore recommended as a minivan replacement for families.

The dimensions have been subtly changed, and at a length of 4.68 meters something like muscles can be seen on the sides.

Nissan first showed the X-Trail statically, we will then report on the first driving impressions.

In addition to a mild hybrid-supported 1.5-liter petrol engine with 163 hp, the new e-power hybrid is available as a drive, which Nissan classifies as the future favorite of customers.

Its power plant creates an electric driving experience without ever being able or supposed to charge externally.

It consists of a high-capacity battery and an integrated powertrain that includes a 158hp 1.5-litre variable compression ratio turbocharged petrol engine, power generator, inverter and 150kW electric motor.

The petrol engine is used solely to generate electricity, while the electric unit always drives the wheels.

Such machine rooms take some getting used to, we shall see.

In the front-wheel drive version, it has 204 hp, the all-wheel drive version has 213 hp.

The new X-Trail is furnished with a modern digital cockpit including a real head-up display, a touch screen in the middle and shelves that look useful, the rear doors open by almost 90 degrees, which is easy on the joints, as is emphasized in the comfort section.

The prices are noticeably increasing, entry is now possible for around 35,500 euros.

Market launch should be in November.
