It has been confirmed that coach Lee Kyu-hyeon (42), a former figure skating national, was arrested and handed over to trial on charges of sexually assaulting a minor student.

Uijeongbu District Prosecutors' Office announced today (7th) that the 1st Criminal Division (Prosecutor Son Jeong-suk) of the Namyangju District Office arrested and indicted this coach in the middle of last month on charges of violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Violence Crimes.

Lee is accused of sexually assaulting a teenage disciple he taught earlier this year.

The case was initially investigated by the Songpa Police Station in Seoul, and Lee was arrested without detention and transferred to the Seoul Eastern District Prosecutor's Office, but it was transferred to the Namyangju District Office, where Lee's address is, at the beginning of last month.

The Namyangju District Office, which took over the case, found that the crime was bad and requested an arrest warrant for Mr. Lee, and the court issued a warrant for destruction of evidence and fears of fleeing.

Prosecutors said Lee denies allegations of sexual assault.

He is also the younger brother of Kyu-hyuk Lee, a former speed skater, and has a record of participating in the Winter Olympics twice in a row, including Nagano in 1998 and Salt Lake in 2002.

He worked as a coach after retiring in 2003, and in 2017, a controversial scene of encouraging athletes waiting for scores to be announced at the International Skating Union (ISU) Figure Skating Junior Competition.
