A head-on collision between two vehicles in Ariège, on a road linking Toulouse to Andorra, killed six people on Friday, including two children, and several injured.

Two other people are in absolute emergency and two in relative emergency, the prefecture said.

"Six people lost their lives, including two children," Foix prosecutors told AFP.

Two other people are in absolute emergency and two in relative emergency, the prefecture said.

Ongoing investigations

One of the vehicles is registered in France and the other in Spain, according to a source close to the investigation.

"All investigations are underway" to determine the circumstances of the accident and identify the victims, said the prosecution without giving further details.

The frontal impact took place at Savignac-les-Ormeaux, near Ax-les-Thermes and the RN20 was cut in both directions, according to the prefecture.

The injured were airlifted to Purpan hospital in Toulouse.
