Every year around this time the sky is illuminated by the

shooting star shower (or meteor shower) of the Perseids

.

They are also popularly known as Tears of San Lorenzo, due to their proximity to the festival of San Lorenzo (August 10).

Although they can be observed throughout the month of August,

the days of greatest activity of the Perseids are usually around 10-14

.

On those days, however, the Moon will be in a crescent phase, "so its brightness could disturb the observation of the weakest meteors," says Isabel Pérez, astrotourism monitor for the Navalmedio nature activities company.

"This year, the most favorable dates to see the meteor shower are between August 5 and 9 due to the absence of the Moon."

Produced by

particles from comet Swift-Tuttle

, the Perseids take their name from the Perseus constellation, since from perspective, they appear to come from the direction of said constellation, although they have no real connection with it.

The best conditions for its observation are in places far from urban centers, without light pollution, and with a horizon free of obstacles.

"The best thing to do is to be in a place where you can see the sky with breadth and wait long enough, since meteors can appear at any time, or spend a good time without any appearing," says Isabel Pérez.

Where to see the Perseids?

According to experts, one of the best areas in the Community of Madrid is the

Sierra de Guadarrama

, due to its low light pollution.

Some of the most recommendable points are the

Puerto de Navacerrada in Cercedilla

, from where several perfect routes leave for stargazing, such as the one that leads to the viewpoint of the Pradera de Siete Picos.

Another good place is the

Valle de la Fuenfría

, also in Cercedilla;

the route between leafy pine forests gives way to clearings in which the sky appears imposing.

At the foot of the Sierra,

the cattle pasture of Los Molinos

is also a recommendable site, thanks to the many trails that cross it, while

Los Rasos

, a spot located on a high point from where you can see beautiful views, is the site with the greatest claim. of a circular route of about 4 km that leaves from the town of Mataelpino.

The

Sierra de Los Porrones

in El Boalo and the

Mirador del Sanatorio del Guadarrama

in Navacerrada are also ideal for seeing the meteor shower these days.

The company

Navalmedio Naturaleza

organizes guided outings in all these points between the 6th and the 15th of August.

These are hiking and sky observation tours of about two and a half hours in groups of no more than 30 people.

Price: 20 euros;

under 10 years, 10 euros.
