The Ministry of Justice has come up with measures to prevent illegal immigrants from entering the country by detouring to Jeju Island, where they can enter without a visa.

The Ministry of Justice announced today (4th) that it has decided to promote the introduction of the Electronic Travel Authorization System (K-ETA) in Jeju Island.

The K-ETA is a system that requires citizens of 112 countries to obtain travel permits prior to departure.

At the time of its introduction in September last year, Jeju Island was exempted from K-ETA application considering the characteristics of an international tourist city.

However, a problem has been raised recently as the number of cases of foreigners seeking illegal employment entering Jeju Island without a visa and leaving without a visa has increased.

The Ministry of Justice expected that the introduction of K-ETA to Jeju Island would prevent foreigners from boarding domestic flights in advance for the purpose of illegal stay.

As a result, it is expected that side effects such as diplomatic friction due to a large number of entry bans, unauthorized departures after entry, and an increase in illegal stay will be prevented.

Minister of Justice Han Dong-hoon said, "We will strengthen border management, such as encouraging legal entry by simplifying the procedure as much as possible, but resolutely blocking systematic illegal entry attempts."
