From tomorrow (the 12th), there is one more thing to pay attention to when driving.

When turning right at an intersection, if there is a crosswalk, you can only pass slowly when all people have crossed or no one is trying to cross.

In addition, there are places where pedestrian priority roads are introduced depending on the region.

<Reporter Park Ye-rin>

This afternoon at the Yangpyeong-dong intersection in Seoul.

SBS reporters watched the vehicle turning right at the intersection for 20 minutes.

Pedestrians are crossing the crosswalk and more than 20 vehicles pass by without stopping, or while pedestrians are standing to cross.

It is one per minute, and starting tomorrow, all violations of the law will result in a fine of 60,000 won and 10 demerit points.

Until today, if there are no people crossing the street, you can turn right at the intersection regardless of the pedestrian signal.

However, you may pass slowly if all people have crossed the crosswalk or no one is about to cross.

Safety measures within the child protection area have also been strengthened.

In the case of a crosswalk without a traffic light, if there was no one crossing, you could pass at a slow speed, but starting tomorrow, you will have to stop the car.

It is also pointed out that the enforcement standards are ambiguous in the field.

[Kyungjae Choi / Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul: It is a little difficult for the driver to judge whether a pedestrian will actually cross or not, so shouldn't there be a situation in which the driver's position is also considered...

.]

[Choi Chung-man / Attorney: Confusion inevitably occurs at the scene, and it seems difficult to avoid for the time being until the cases of crackdowns and court precedents pile up.]

Police officials clearly express the intention of pedestrians to cross, or promptly enter the crosswalk. He explained that the scope of enforcement would be limited to the case of approaching pedestrians.

The National Police Agency urged drivers to pay attention, saying that fines and demerit points will be given for violations of the law even during the one-month guidance period starting tomorrow.

<Reporter Hong Seung-yeon> This

is the entrance to Paldo Market in Suyeong-gu, Busan.

Because there are so many people and even cars and buses are mixed, it is usually crowded like this.

Pedestrians narrowly pass between cars, and motorcycles mix with each other, making it difficult to stand on the road for a while.

Here, in December of last year, her grandmother was crossing the street with her granddaughter in a stroller, and was hit by her car and all died.

This road, which was dangerous for pedestrians, was designated as a pedestrian priority road seven months after the accident.

Not only here, but also in Busan, Daejeon, and Daegu, 21 places have been designated as pedestrian priority roads.

Under the amended law, vehicles on this road must keep a safe distance when passing by pedestrians, and must slow down or stop within 20 km to avoid obstructing pedestrian traffic.

Violation of this will result in a fine of 40,000 won per passenger vehicle and 10 demerit points.

[Cho Joo-han / Senior Researcher, Samsung Traffic Safety and Culture Research Institute: Lowering the speed limit to 20 km/h means 'zeroing' the death toll, and it is expected that the death toll will decrease by at least 30%.]

However, on the first day of implementation Starting tomorrow, we have decided not to crack down on it right away, but to leave a training period of one to two months depending on local conditions.

[Lee Yun-suk / Nam-gu, Busan: (a car) is a person or someone (discovers) and if you try to slow down, an accident has already occurred, so if you reduce the speed a little, there will be fewer accidents.

] We plan to expand.
