From tomorrow (12th), the amended Road Traffic Act that expands the driver's duty to temporarily stop in front of a crosswalk is in effect, and there are a lot of drivers who say that they are confused.

The amendments require drivers to stop when pedestrians cross the crosswalk, not just when they are 'about to cross'.

In case of violation, a fine of 60,000 won and 10 demerit points will be imposed on the driver.

The problem is that there are ambiguities in the strengthened road traffic law.

A typical example is the part where you have to look for pedestrians trying to cross the crosswalk and stop temporarily.

This is because it is not easy to interpret whether a pedestrian is simply standing in front of the crosswalk or when he is giving a hand signal to cross the crosswalk.

Experts believe that confusion will be inevitable until concrete cases are accumulated through precedents.

However, there are many opinions that the Road Traffic Act needs to be strengthened even if there are some ambiguities.

This is because the law has been amended as a measure to reduce the number of pedestrian fatalities at crosswalks, as more than 1,000 cases occur every year.

However, there are opinions that the emphasis should be placed on education rather than crackdown and punishment.
