It is news that drunk driving on bicycles is on the rise after social distancing is lifted.

As a result of comparing the number of bicycle drunk driving arrests in Seoul before and after April 18, when social distancing was completely lifted, 51 cases from March 20th to April 17th started on April 18th. By May 16, there were 71 cases, an increase of over 40%.

While the number of evening seats increased due to the lifting of the distance, it became difficult to find a taxi, so the public bicycle Ttareungi, which is nearby, started to be used on the way home.

The current Road Traffic Act classifies bicycles as vehicles, but the level of punishment is minimal.

A police official said, 'Regardless of the blood alcohol level, there is a widespread perception that 'pay the money' because a fine of 30,000 won is imposed on a drunk bicycle.

Although the Seoul Metropolitan Government suspends the license for use for one year if a drunk Ttareungi is caught, realistic sanctions are difficult because it is not easy to share information with the police.

There are voices calling for raising the level of punishment and alertness to prevent drunken bike driving.
