A man in his 30s was arrested by the police for stealing face photos that were publicly available on social media, synthesizing them into pornographic videos, and distributing them on overseas sites.

The Namyangju Northern Police Station in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 3rd that they had arrested and sent a man A in his 30s for violating the Act on Special Cases concerning the Punishment of Sexual Violence Crimes.

Mr. A is accused of downloading and distributing a deepfake video by downloading a large number of unspecified face photos that were posted publicly on social media in August of last year.

It was also investigated that Mr. A was trying to induce additional crimes by capturing the video he produced and distributing, pretending to be the informant, approaching the victims and building a bond.

There were a total of 7 victims, but all of them reported to the police immediately after being contacted by A, and did not lead to further crimes.

In the course of the crime, in order to avoid the investigation network, Mr. A used a method of manipulating IP using a VPN and denied the allegation, but the investigation team succeeded in arresting him by securing decisive evidence.

A police official said, "There is a possibility that photos posted on social media may be misused, so it is necessary to set the scope of disclosure appropriately."
