A dog owner who was charged with animal cruelty by hanging a 2 kg hammer around the neck of a three-month-old puppy was sentenced to a fine of 500,000 won at the appeals court.

The Daegu District Court's Criminal Case Division 2-1 (Chief Judge Kim Seong-soo) announced today (13th) that it had sentenced a fine of 500,000 won to A (58), who was handed over to the trial for abuse of a dog under the pretext of exercise.

Mr. A is accused of inflicting pain with a hammer weighing about 2 kg around the neck of a 3-4 month old puppy he was raising at his home in Gyeongsangbuk-do in October 2019.

Mr. A was summaryly indicted last year with a fine of 1 million won, but he requested a formal trial.

At the trial, he claimed, "I am a person who likes dogs too," and "I attached a heavy metal rod to exercise the dog."

However, the court of first instance did not accept it and imposed a fine of 1 million won.

The court of appeals said, "It is clear that tying the hammer to the dog's neck was excessive and abuse, but there is no evidence that the accused did it for the sole purpose of inflicting pain and rejecting the claim that the defendant was trying to train the dog. He reduced the fine to 500,000 won.

Earlier, the animal group Care released photos and videos of a dog with a sledgehammer, saying, "As the abuser A claims, if a 2kg hammer is attached to the neck of a 7-8kg dog, it is said that it is equivalent to putting 9.28kg on the neck of a 70kg adult male." I have requested severe punishment for Mr.

The abused puppy is currently unknown.
