• Dedicated to parties, so-called “High Power” speakers are now numerous on the market.

  • With its “R-1958 DJ” model, the Muse firm offers a complete device for 279 euros.

  • Despite some shortcomings, its 500 watts of power and its Full LED front panel allow you to perfectly set the mood for an evening.

You are the DJ!

With its “M-1958 DJ”

high power

speaker , Muse offers a complete device to set the mood for your evenings.

500 watts of power, Full LED facade, Bluetooth player, USB and even CD… this “Party Box”, with which the editorial staff of “20 Minutes” turned up the sound, does it deserve to accompany us on the dance floor?

From Bluetooth to CD

We saw this type of speakers hit the market a few years ago, notably from Sony, JBL and LG.

This is the kind of device in which we often hesitate to invest.

However, while the links of the Covid are finally loosened, we have a crazy desire to party!

Sold for 279 euros, the “M-1958 DJ” loudspeaker launched by Muse claims to help us do this and arrives just in time for the Fête de la Musique and the summer fiestas.

Unpacked, the device imposes.

Measuring 80.9 x 30 x 24.9 cm for 10.4 kg, the speaker has carrying handles, but also wheels to be moved like a simple suitcase.

Too bad Muse didn't see fit to pair it with a protective cover.

We quickly understand how it works.

Plugged into the mains, all you have to do is select your audio source from the buttons on the top of the speaker or from the remote control: Bluetooth, USB, AUX, FM and even CD player.

The total.

It is also possible to connect a guitar and a wired microphone (supplied): two jack sockets are located at the back.

A Full LED facade for a real

light show

Special feature: unlike many others, the front of the "M-1958 DJ" speaker is Full Led.

Thus, a veritable carpet of tiny bulbs lines the front of the machine.

On trial, the effect is stunning, but also… a bit frustrating.

If we can modify (but also interrupt) the display of a thousand and one shades of colors, its possibilities are ultimately quite limited.

Only a few more or less bright display options are offered.

Here we are far from certain Sony speakers of the same type which, using an application, allow you to completely personalize your

light show

.

However, the light effects remain very dynamic (and punctuated by the flashes of the strobe on the front).

They operate to the rhythm of the sounds played.

Be careful, only the volume keys on the top of the device are backlit, which can be a bit restrictive to use the speaker in a dark room.

A microphone with effects

The 500 watts broadcast by the four loudspeakers make their voices heard.

As we found during our tests, the "M-1958 DJ" is more than enough to set fire to a room of comfortable size.

The sound offered is certainly quite conventional, without any particular musical signature, but the basses that we covet for this type of device are very comfortable here and punctuate the listening time with a sacred tempo.

You can change the source with one click and go from a piece coiled in your phone to another housed on a CD.

For its part, the wired microphone (whose sound power can be modulated) is weighted with a few vocal effects: echo, female voice, robot voice... We can imagine the kids also having a field day to bring their little personal touch to the swaying of their elders… And the latter give in to the temptation of a karaoke.

Serious service and tight price

On arrival, Muse's "R-1958 DJ" speaker fulfills its primary mission: to help us have fun.

Its few technical limits (we can also cite the absence of a battery to use it outdoors) do not alter a convincing overall performance, for a well-considered selling price (279 euros).

At this price, there are smaller and more discreet ones like the Sony MHC-V02 (150 watts, 179 euros) or more powerful ones like the LG Xboom ON5 and its 1800 watts which also allow you to mix your sounds (299 euros) , but without a Full LED front panel…

Between the two, the "R-1958 DJ" does the job seriously and can perfectly suit the DJ apprentices in us.
