Former President Lee Myung-bak (81), who is imprisoned in Anyang Prison, recently applied for suspension of execution.



According to the legal community on the 8th, former President Lee submitted an application for suspension of execution to the Anyang Branch of the Suwon District Prosecutors' Office on the 3rd of the last day due to health problems.



The Criminal Procedure Act provides for ▲ when there is a risk of serious harm to health due to the execution of the sentence ▲ when the age is 70 years old or older ▲ 6 months of pregnancy or more ▲ when there is no one to protect the elderly lineal ascendant or young direct descendant may be stopped.



An official from the prosecution explained, "The application came from the former president's side, and the Suwon District Prosecutor's Office will hold a review committee to review and decide whether or not to accept it."



Former President Lee has been repeatedly hospitalized and discharged due to chronic diseases such as diabetes.



Prosecutors are said to have checked the medical records of former President Lee and also interviewed medical staff.



After being investigated by prosecutors on charges of embezzlement and bribery, former president Lee was arrested in March 2018 and served a year in prison before he was released on bail in March 2019.



Former President Lee, who was on trial without detention, was re-arrested in court in February 2020 when he was sentenced to 17 years in prison in the second trial, but was released again after six days after appealing the decision to cancel the bail again.



After that, former President Lee, whose sentence was confirmed by the Supreme Court in October 2020, was imprisoned at the Dongbu Detention Center on November 2nd of that year, but was transferred to Anyang Prison after the outbreak of the Corona 19 mass infection at the correctional facility.
