Some hospitals are introduced to cataract patients through brokers, and the damage continues without end because they do surgery that they do not have to do.

There are a lot of people who experience side effects after surgery, and it is not easy to get compensation, so you need to be careful.

Reporter Han Seong-hee covered the story.

Mr. A, who celebrated his 60th birthday last year, was recommended to undergo eye surgery by a broker at an ophthalmology hospital that he met through an acquaintance.

As everyone gets older, the symptoms of cataracts cause blurred vision, but it was said that it could be improved through surgery.

[Mr. Kim/Son of a cataract surgery side effect patient: The cost of surgery is about this, and some of it can be returned to the medical insurance for actual loss, and we (broker) will provide additional support (said)...

.]

However, after the operation, the condition of the eyes got worse.

[Mr. Kim / Son of cataract surgery side effect patient: The house is always bright because the lights are on.

But I can't see my face 1m in front of me.

'It's cloudy and dark' I keep saying things like this...

.]

At the university hospital I went to for the treatment of side effects, I was told that "it appears that cataract surgery could not be recommended due to high intraocular pressure."

It was suspected that the operation was 'don't ask' without sufficient examination, but the hospital repeated only that it was not responsible.

A's family visited the Medical Dispute Mediation and Arbitration Agency, but there was no clear answer.

[Korea Medical Dispute Mediation and Arbitration Service Officer: We can investigate the case only after consent from the hospital.]

Cataract surgery is a relatively simple operation.

[A ophthalmology staff: Usually 10 minutes, 15 minutes?

It's not a long surgery.

Dangerous or not...

.]

However, as a result of last year's survey by the Korea Consumer Agency, about 30% of surgery patients experienced side effects such as light blur and decreased vision.

The increasing number of random surgeries through brokers is also pointed out as a factor.

In a survey by the General Insurance Association, there were cases in which more than 1,000 cataract surgeries were performed a month at an ophthalmic hospital with two or three doctors.

[B ophthalmology staff: (Doctor) I had to go out and do surgery in the middle, so I had to go back and forth like this...

.]

[Mr. Hong/Ophthalmology Patient: (Even at other ophthalmology hospitals) The doctor did not do an eye examination and saw this, just.

Ding with that.

It's a cataract, so I'm going to have surgery right now.

.]

The Korean Society of Ophthalmology recommends that you decide whether to have surgery after being tested at at least two hospitals and fully informed of the side effects.
