As the cost of renting a car in Jeju Island has risen sharply, the number of people bringing their own car is also increasing.

[Hyeondong-ga/Jeju Tourist: My home is Naju, but I came to Jeju Island by boat from Mokpo.

It cost only half the cost.

The cost of renting a car in Jeju has risen sharply as tourists flock to it after Corona.

[Rental car company official: I think it's increased by about 30-50% compared to the past.] At

this point, the supply of rental cars has also increased a bit and the turmoil seems to have calmed down a bit, but that's not easy to find.

Why?

On the supply side, the total rental car rental system implemented in Jeju Island has the greatest impact.

Jeju Island set the appropriate total amount of rental car rentals from 32,000 units in 2018 to 25,000 units, and reduced the car accordingly.

Currently, there are about 29,000 units.

Tourist demand is also increasing here.

The number of tourists to Jeju Island this year increased by 31.4% compared to the previous year in terms of cumulative total until April.

However, Jeju Island is of the opinion that the total amount system is absolutely necessary.

[Jeong Chang-bo/Jeju Provincial Office Taxi Administration Team Leader: If traffic is congested, the quality of life of residents can be greatly reduced.

(Jeju Island) cannot expand roads or do anything like that.

Also, since it has volcanic rock, it is very difficult to dig the ground like land...

Experts say that policies can be found to complement the cap-and-trade system.

[Kim Joo-young/Professor of Transportation Policy, Korea Transportation University: I think that we must first have such a public transportation system that can change the (rental car) return location (outside the city center) or voluntarily move demand by public transportation bus or taxi. .]

It is necessary to come up with an alternative that protects the environment of Jeju and encompasses the convenience of residents and tourists.
