Due to the prolonged stay at home due to COVID-19, there have been many cases of adopting or receiving pets.

As social distancing is lifted, the number of abandoned pets is on the rise.

According to the Animal Welfare Association, the number of abandoned and lost animals registered in the animal protection management system last year was 116,900, down 9.1% from the previous year.

Experts point to the perception that one of the biggest reasons for abandoning pets is that they become obstacles to going out or traveling.

During the COVID-19 period, they did not go out or travel anyway, so naturally the number of abandoned pets decreased.

However, recently, as social distancing has been lifted and outdoor activities have increased, the number of abandoned pets is increasing again.

According to the Animal Protection Management System of the Agriculture, Forestry and Livestock Quarantine Quarantine Headquarters, the number of abandoned animal registrations in the last month was 11,000, up 30% from the previous month.

Animal rights groups have argued that the animal registration system should be supplemented so that the abandonment of companion animals can be effectively cracked down, while emphasizing the strict responsibility of those who keep companion animals.
