Carlos

Bahlsen

was still working as a pharmacist in Madrid when he suffered a

spinal cord injury

that left him disabled.

The medical prognosis could not be worse: he was never going to walk again.

Perhaps, with a lot of effort and work, he would be able to take a few steps with the help of a walker, but he did not accept it and undertook a journey of more than 12,500 kilometers to reach

Paia

, a small town located in the county of Maui, in Hawaii.

An acquaintance had told her that she could find a solution there.

And it was in that town, with less than 3,000 inhabitants, where he learned about the properties of

cannabidol (CBD)

, one of the more than 120 cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant and that is not psychoactive.

This is just the beginning of the story of

Paia Botanicals

, a

Spanish firm

dedicated to therapeutic cannabis, its multiple health benefits and its applications in daily beauty routines, launched less than a year ago.

Its ideologues are

four young people

: a pharmacist, an environmentalist specialized in therapeutic cannabis, an expert in digital marketing and a lawyer.

Two of them, Carlos (33) and Pablo (31), are

Bahlsen's sons.

"The problem that our father had is known as spasticity. Basically, the muscle remains contracted because the nerve sends a signal and since it is damaged it continues to send it," explains

Pablo

, who is also a pharmacist.

No matter how many muscle relaxants he took, the muscle continued to contract.

But with CBD, the nerve stopped sending that signal and

the problem was

automatically regulated, "he adds. Accompanied by a strict routine of physiotherapeutic exercises, he was

able to walk again.

"Sometimes he uses the cane when he is very tired, but nothing more." .

The experience, but also the strength of their father, encouraged them to delve into the subject.

"We began to study it, to see how it was treated in other parts of the world and we discovered that it was a

different and natural alternative

to a lot of pathologies. That is why we decided to bring it here and try to help other people," he says.

At first, they focused on online sales, but in January they expanded their horizons and now have a physical space in the

Las Letras

neighborhood .

Pablo remembers that at first the people who entered the place were amazed that they had products for

cosmetic use

.

To such an extent that they had to place a sign at the entrance informing that CBD also came in cream.

Today, precisely, its flagship product is the anti-

aging facial cream

with 0.10% CBD, which helps reduce wrinkles and signs of skin aging due to its anti-

inflammatory

capacity .

In the premises, where talks are also given by specialists in health, cosmetics and well-being, there are more than

thirty products

;

seven of them are self-made.

Moisturizing creams, one of them with honey, body lotions, lip balms, serums and masks.

Also oils, which offer various alternatives depending on their uses and concentrations of cannabinoids in the formulation (from 5 to 20%).

"They are all for

topical use

because in Spain right now sublingual use is not regulated, although our formulas are also prepared for this," he points out.

CBD helps to calm

pain

, also to

sleep

, controls the production of skin fat, is an

antioxidant

and is

antiseptic

, Pablo details.

In other neighboring countries, where sublingual use is permitted, it is used, in turn, for other treatments, such as

Parkinson

's .

Despite the fact that today the CBD boom is reflected in the number of businesses that revolve around this cannabis compound,

much information is still lacking

in the population.

"There are people who still do not understand the concept that CBD

does not

get you high . You have to explain it over and over again so that they trust that it is a truly therapeutic and not recreational product," says

Oriana Santiago

, environmentalist and promoter of

Holy Bioma

.

Oriana managed her brand of

natural products

during the pandemic.

It offers oils and creams, all made by herself.

She only sells online because having a store in Spain "is still quite delicate and you have to

take a lot

of risks ," she says.

But the largest firms, such as

CBWEED

, have decided to go for franchises and show their product offerings through shop windows.

This company of

Italian origin

has already opened seven stores in the Community of Madrid since it landed in the country in 2020.

Angelo de Robertis

, responsible for the development of the franchise, points out that customers of all ages arrive at its stores.

The most demanded are oils and flowers.

But they also offer food items -such as a paste with hemp that contains Omega 3 and 6-, cosmetic products and a line for pets, which has also had a very good response.

For Angelo, "today the population is

more aware

that these types of products solve many of the problems they have.
