A 40-year-old man accused of setting fire to his factory for insurance has been sentenced to prison.

The 12th Criminal Division of the Daejeon District Court (Presiding Judge Na Sang-hoon) announced today (27th) that a 47-year-old man who was charged with arson of a general building and violation of the Special Act on Prevention of Insurance Fraud was sentenced to three years in prison.

Person A was handed over to trial on July 6 last year on charges of setting fire to his Bungeoppang material factory located in Jung-gu, Daejeon.

He was found to have committed an arson by installing a delayed ignition system in various parts of the factory after all the employees had left work to collect the insurance money.

The fire burned facilities such as the floor and walls of the factory and various raw materials, causing property damage worth 160 million won.

Mr. A filled out an insurance claim form 10 days after the factory suffered fire damage and submitted it to the insurance company employee.

Previously, it was revealed that Mr. A abused this when he received an insurance payment of 400 million won due to an unknown fire or arson for which the culprit could not be identified in his factory over the past three years.

The court said, "The accused tried to extort insurance money by setting fire to his factory building for the purpose of receiving insurance money, but the crime and method were very poor." "If it existed and the fire spread, it could have caused serious damage to the lives and property of residents," he said.

"The amount of insurance money that attempted defrauding is very large, and he denies the crime and does not reflect on it," he said.
