It has been confirmed that the son of Kim In-cheol, a candidate for Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, was selected as a scholarship student at a time when Kim was the alumni president of a scholarship program.

Candidate Kim himself, his wife, daughter, and son all lived abroad as scholarship students for the program.

Correspondent Kim Deok-hyeon reported.

This is an internet site that collects records of Fulbright Scholarship students.

You can see the name of the son of candidate Kim In-cheol, who entered Columbia University in the United States in February 2016 and completed a master's program for two years.

In 2015, when it was decided that his son Kim would receive a scholarship, Kim was serving as the president of the Korea Fulbright Alumni Association.

This scholarship, which is selected by the Korea-American Education Commission, selects about 20 students every year, and includes tuition of up to $40,000 per year, living expenses of up to 3 million won per month, and airfare.

However, the Fulbright Alumni Association said, "We are actively supporting the operation of the Korea-US Education Committee."

In addition, it was confirmed that Professor A, who was vice president during the time of Kim candidate alumni president, participated in the screening as a member of the Korean side at the time of selecting Kim's son.

This raises suspicions that candidate Kim may have influenced his son's scholarship selection process.

Candidate Kim and his spouse received Fulbright scholarships in 1996 and 2004, respectively, and before their son, their daughter also received a scholarship in 2014 and completed a master's program at Cornell University.

The whole family lived in the United States as Fulbright Scholars.

In this regard, the Korea-U.S. Education Commission did not provide a separate explanation.

[Korea-US Education Commission official: I have nothing to say about it because the company is responding legally.] The

Ministry of Education personnel hearing preparation team said, "Candidate Kim was not in a position to be involved in preferential treatment at the time." I will explain it directly at the hearing," he said.
