A 20-year-old mother who was handed over to trial for abandoning her newborn baby in a garbage bag has been sentenced to probation.

Yesterday (20th), according to the legal circles, the 5th single criminal division of the Suncheon Branch of the Gwangju District Court (Chief Judge Yoo Jae-hyeon) sentenced 21-year-old A, who was charged with attempted infanticide, to 1 year and 6 months in prison and 2 years of probation.

A is accused of abandoning a newborn baby in a garbage bag in a one-room village in Mipyeong-dong, Yeosu-si, Jeollanam-do on September 12 last year.

At that time, the newborn was rescued by a passerby and was not life-threatening.

It was investigated that Mr. A committed the crime because he felt the burden of raising children in a situation where he was experiencing financial difficulties due to his boyfriend's military enlistment.

The court ruled, "The defendant's responsibility is very heavy because he attempted to kill his life by abandoning his child."

He continued, "After the defendant gave birth alone, it seems that the crime in this case was committed without being able to escape the physical and psychological shock, that the child is growing up healthy and currently raising him, and that the accused should reflect on his mistakes and raise him with all his heart. I took into account what I am confident about,” he said, explaining the reason for his sentencing.
