Although social distancing has been lifted, the corona epidemic is not over.

Now that we can get loose, we need to pay more attention to personal quarantine in our daily lives, and medical reporter Cho Dong-chan will tell you what to keep in mind.

Recently, a Thai research team tested the risk of infection with COVID-19 in a public toilet.

If both infected and non-infected people did not wear masks in public toilets, the chance of infection was 100%.

It was calculated that it dropped to 10% when only the confirmed patient wore a mask, and to 0.01% when both of them wore a mask.

A Scottish study also found that the risk of infection in a public toilet was comparable to that of an infected person speaking out loud within 2 meters.

What is the reason that toilets are specifically pointed out among public places?

The virus of an infected person is mainly found in saliva splashed when coughing, and small amounts are present in urine and feces.

Since the virus is in a lump, it usually cannot exceed 2m and cannot move to other spaces.

But the moment you flush the toilet, things change.

A tiny drop of water spreads through the air, where the virus can ride it and travel to another cell.

Because it is an enclosed space, the longer you use the toilet, the greater the risk of infection, so women are at a disadvantage compared to men.

However, it can be prevented by using a mask with strong protection such as the KF94 mask.

If the current trend continues, the quarantine obligation will disappear at the end of next month, but the numbers to remember are '5' and '10'.

The risk of transmission is high up to 5 days after confirming the diagnosis and decreases after 5 days, but it is still not safe until 10 days.

So, after 5 days, you can go to an important meeting.

However, it would be better to postpone the meeting between the elderly and the chronically ill after 10 days.

Even indoors where many people gather, if you ventilate the room for more than 10 minutes at a time 3 times a day, you can lower the risk of infection by a third.
