A man in his 30s has been arrested for cheating a taxi driver and stealing borrowed money by saying he needs his wife's hospital expenses.

This unmarried man traveled across the country and committed 40 crimes using a similar method under the guise of a 'virtual wife'.

The Haenam Police Station in Jeollanam-do announced on the 11th that they had arrested A (33) on the charge of borrowing money from a taxi driver and then running away (fraud).

On the afternoon of the 31st of last month, Mr. A is charged with borrowing 880,000 won from taxi driver B after moving from Haenam Bus Terminal to a hospital in Mokpo on the afternoon of the 31st and not paying it back.

He is also accused of not paying 60,000 won for intercity travel.

As a result of the police investigation, Mr. A deceived and borrowed money from Mr. B immediately after arriving at the destination by saying, 'My wife gave birth and I had to pay her hospital bills, but I left my wallet.'

At the same time, it was investigated that he gave his contact information to Mr. B and said, 'I will repay the borrowed money as soon as his father arrives'.

In response, Mr. B handed the cash withdrawn from the ATM machine in front of the hospital and the money he had on hand to Mr. A.

The wife and father mentioned by the unmarried Mr. A were, of course, fictitious.

Mr. B, who handed the money, waited for Mr. A for over an hour, but when no contact was reached, he realized that he had been deceived and reported it to the police.

After conducting a communication and interrogation investigation, the police arrested Mr. A in Seoul six days after reporting it.

However, Mr. A's fraud was not confined to one area.

Immediately after the arrest, Mr. A confessed that he had "committed similar crimes all over the country," and the police confirmed that 37 similar cases were received at each police station across the country.

The police plan to send the case to the prosecution as soon as the investigation into Mr. A is completed.

In addition, the remaining 37 cases of fraudulent crimes with proven charges will also be forwarded to the Haenam Branch of the Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office from each competent police station.
