Now, more than three decades later, Ron Gilbert and

Dave Grossman

, writers of the original game, will create a new title together with LucasFilm Games,

Return to Monkey Island

, which although it is technically the sixth official game in the saga, will be in charge of closing the story of the original Monkey Island and its sequel,

Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge

.

Gilbert announced the new installment on his website on April 1, April Fools' Day in the US.

This led many of his followers to think that it was a joke, but

Devolver

, the studio in charge of distributing the adventure together with Lucasfilm Games, has confirmed the launch for this 2022.

The game will be developed by

Terrible Toybox

, Gilbert's own company.

Series composers

Michael Land, Peter McConnel, and Clint Bajakian

will be responsible for the game's music, and

The two original games were reissued in 2009 and 2010 on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the saga, with reinterpreted cartoon-style graphics that will be maintained in the new installment twelve years later.
