A detainee from the Châteaudun detention center (Eure-et-Loir) died Thursday of his injuries, after being struck by a fellow prisoner using a homemade weapon, said the Chartres prosecutor's office.

The alleged perpetrator of the blows, aged 27 like the victim, was placed in police custody at the Châteaudun gendarmerie "under the qualification of assassination", the public prosecutor of Chartres Rémi told AFP. Coutin, confirming information from

L'Écho républican

"The suspect used a weapon by destination made with a piece of glass, the origin of which is unknown for the moment, in order to strike the fellow prisoner. The investigation will have to determine the exact circumstances of this assassination and the causes that we have not determined at this early stage of the investigation,” said Rémi Coutin.

Initially releasable in 2023

The suspect had joined the Châteaudun detention center in January 2021 after a stint in Fleury-Mérogis prison (Essonne).

He was serving a one-year prison sentence pronounced by the Bobigny court for drug trafficking and a two-year prison sentence for domestic violence.

His record shows a dozen convictions.

He was released in 2023, according to the Chartres prosecutor.

The victim, sentenced a dozen times by the courts, had been imprisoned in Châteaudun prison since April 2021, after a sentence pronounced by the Angers court of two and a half years in prison for domestic violence, detailed Rémi Coutin.

The investigation was entrusted to the research brigade of Châteaudun and the research section of Orléans.

This homicide comes almost a month after the fatal attack on Yvan Colonna in Arles prison, where the Corsican independence activist was serving a life sentence for the assassination of the prefect Claude Erignac in 1998.
