Hackers Lapsus$ claims to have the source code of Cortana
Cybersecurity Okta, the new victim of Lapsus$ hackers
Several security experts and hackers have deciphered the organization chart of one of the most active cybercriminal groups of the moment,
Lapsus$
, and the brains of the operation have turned out to be a 16-year-old boy who lives with his mother on the outskirts of
Oxford
, In England.
The young man would have coordinated several -although not all- the attacks that high-level technology companies have suffered in recent months, such as
Electronic Arts, Nvidia, Samsung
, Microsoft or Okta.
He operated on the networks under the pseudonym
'White'
and
'Breachabase'
and, together with other members of the group, took advantage of the carelessness of company employees to steal information and demand a ransom for it.
According to experts, another of the ways in which Lapsus$ managed to gain access to different companies was by offering rewards to employees in exchange for using their accounts temporarily.
The group also
bought credentials stolen
by other hackers or used phishing techniques to infect victims' computers.
The youngster could have earned more than
12.5 million euros
in recent months.
A member of Lapsus$ who had fought with him has been the key to unmasking him.
ARRESTED
In a coordinated operation with several security companies, the London police have arrested seven people who could be members of Lapsus$.
Although the police have not confirmed the name of the group,
the detainees are between 16 and 21 years old
and their arrest coincides with several messages on the Telegram channels of Lapsus$ in which it is explained that some of the members of the group "are They've gone on vacation."
The seven detainees are on provisional release while the case is investigated.
Speaking to the BBC, the 16-year-old's father has assured that his son had never mentioned anything about hacking.
"He is very good with computers and spends a lot of time on the computer.
I always thought he was playing games
," he has said.
Both the company
Palo Alto Networks
and the computer security group Unit 221b are sure, however, that it is the leadership of the mysterious and prolific group.
Both have spent months investigating the adventures of Lapsus$ and the different attacks.
At first it was suspected that the members could be in
Brazil
, since some of the first victims were the Brazilian Ministry of Health and the Portuguese subsidiary of the
Vodafone
operator .
