Pokémon Legends: Arceus, a Pokémon game that is not like the others

There are as many types of Pokémon games as there are monsters you can catch in them.

Well, okay, it's an exaggeration because the list of Pokémon does not stop expanding and is already close to

, but the franchise has given more than a hundred different titles in digital version with all kinds of themes and objectives.

The main ones, some 18 grouped into nine generations, are role-playing games with turn-based combat that have accompanied Nintendo consoles since the Game Boy era.

The formula at this point is more than proven and works.

All Pokémon reach the top of the best-selling game charts shortly after release.

Changing it is tempting fate, but

, developed by Game Freak, has done it sublimely thanks to a good mix of genres.

Set in the past, Arceus abandons concepts such as tournaments or gyms or the very digital Pokédex.

It takes place in the Hisui region, which is what the region that in the rest of the modern Pokémon games is known as Sinnoh was called in the past.

It has six different biomes to explore and capture more than

But the way to do it is a bit different from the previous installments.

You can try your luck by throwing a pokeball, attacking with one of the Pokémon you've already caught or attracting them with different baits, of course, but in this game the turn-based combat has evolved into a freer style and the exploration mechanics

(which it reminds of aesthetically).

During combat there are also two different fighting styles for the Pokémon (fast and strong), which combined with the different abilities of each creature, multiply the strategic possibilities in the fights.

The story of the game is simple.

Our protagonists land, without knowing very well how, in Hisui and end up enrolled in Team Galaxy, a group of enthusiastic Pokémon scholars who try to better understand these wild creatures and create the first Pokédex... on paper.

After a very long tutorial (perhaps the hardest part of the game), the protagonist can explore the different areas of Hisui looking for new Pokémon for his collection.

As we increase our rank within Team Galaxy, we will be able to visit new regions, make more advanced material with which to hunt bigger Pokémon or meet new secondary characters.

In Hisui, the Pokémon do not appear, as in traditional games, as chance encounters, but instead

, you can see them at all times and you have to get close to them to capture them.

An important change in this title is that

, so you have to learn to dodge their attacks and sometimes sneak up on them.

From time to time we will also meet Alpha Pokémon, which are much more aggressive and strong and are distinguished by their red eyes.

These changes completely alter the dynamics of the game and are the breath of fresh air that makes this title not seem like one more in a long list of almost clone titles.

Coupled with open-world exploration, it gives veteran players a new reason to enjoy the series and recapture that feeling of discovering the world of Pokémon for the first time.

Seeing them in their natural environment and as wild creatures also helps give them more of a personality than in previous installments.

The main campaign of

can be finished in just over 20 hours of gameplay, but as is often the case with open world titles, there are

and tasks to complete.

Part of the fun of this title is actually exploring the different regions and enjoying the views.

Without reaching the graphic excellence of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Pokémon Legends: Arceus gives very worthy moments for the capacity of the Nintendo Switch.

The game is now on sale both in physical format and in the eShop at a price of 60 euros and is undoubtedly one of the essential titles of this 2022 for the Switch.
