For these reasons.. "Google" advises you: Do not throw away your old "computer"!

Google has announced an operating system built on older computers, Chrome OS Flex, which makes it ideal for small businesses and educational institutions.

Google aims to also have a positive impact in reducing global e-waste.

You can run Chrome OS Flex using just a USB drive, and it takes a few minutes to set up, TheNextWeb reports.

According to a report published by Al Arabiya.net, this development comes after Google acquired Neverware in 2020, a company that made it possible to load the Chrome operating system on old devices with its CloudReady program.

While there was a report about Google integrating it directly into Chrome OS.

There are certain conditions that you must meet before you can run Chrome OS Flex, including device specifications and compatibility.

Here are the minimum device requirements to run Chrome OS Flex:

Architecture: Intel or AMD x86-64-bit compatible hardware

- RAM: 4 GB

- Internal Storage: 16 GB

The device is bootable from USB.

- BIOS: Full Administrator Access

You cannot run this operating system on devices with ARM processors, such as Macs running M1.

Because ARM-based systems are generally newer, most can run modern software, and they don't necessarily need to be compatible with a lightweight operating system.

However, Google warns that Chrome OS Flex may give you a substandard experience if your system uses components made prior to 2010. Additionally, you may need to tweak your BIOS settings if you can't boot directly from a USB drive.

And if you want to know if your old system can handle the challenge of running Chrome OS Flex, Google has prepared an easy-to-use dashboard for approved forms.

All listed devices are labeled "Verified for Work", "Expected Minor Issues", and "Expected Major Issues", so you can decide to install Chrome OS Flex accordingly.
