“American Traffic Safety”: a dangerous and incomprehensible flaw in Tesla

The US National Traffic Safety Administration said Thursday that electric cars made by Tesla automatically brake without good reason or warning while driving on the highways.

"Complaints allege that when using features including adaptive cruise control, the vehicle unexpectedly applies its brakes while driving fast on the highway," the department added of last year's Model 3 and Model Y cars.

Complainants report that rapid deceleration can occur without warning, randomly, and often repeatedly in a single driving cycle.

The department said it had received 354 complaints over the past nine months about the phenomenon, which consumers described as "phantom suppression."

It said Tesla identified the problem as being related to its advanced driver assistance system, also known as autopilot, which allows its cars to brake and steer automatically within designated lanes.

She said her office of defect investigation had opened an initial assessment "to determine the scope and severity of the problem and to fully assess potential safety issues."

Earlier this month, US media reported that Tesla cars had unexpectedly braked in response to unreal dangers - such as oncoming traffic on two-lane roads - prompting panicked owners to file complaints.
