This is stated in a preprint published on the bioRxiv portal.

“We found that 19 out of 131 randomly selected white-tailed deer (14.5%) tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus antibodies indicative of prior infection ... and whole genome sequencing showed that among white-tailed deer reindeer is spreading the omicron strain, the study says.

The deer were selected from Staten Island, New York between December 12, 2021 and January 31, 2022.

Scientists have expressed concern about the possibility of new strains of coronavirus spreading among animals.

The head of Rospotrebnadzor, Anna Popova, said earlier that the omicron strain of coronavirus began to be detected in mice and rats.

The Emergency Committee of the World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended more careful monitoring of possible cases of transmission of coronavirus infection between humans and animals.
