It is one of the areas most appreciated by tourists who come to Madrid.

Close to the main museums of the city and with an extensive gastronomic offer, the neighborhood of letters has become one of the busiest.

For a few years now, it has also been one of the favorite neighborhoods for lovers of craft beer.

The fault lies with the eight businesses related to this drink that are in its narrow streets.

Far from presenting itself as competition, the presence of some well-known establishments such as Be Hoppy, Fogg and Brew Wild encouraged others to come to the area and join this offer.

"It's common in other cities," says Jacobo Lliso, citing Barcelona and London as examples, where there are areas with a high concentration of this type of establishment.

The characteristics of these places make it possible to go through several of them and not repeat food or drink.

"No bar overlaps," says José Blasco, owner of Fogg.

The offer is such that some believe it is already the "best beer route in Spain".

Brew Wild's Cave

BREW WILD

. Headquarters of the nomadic brewers of La Quince. Own beers and those of other producers fill the local taps. To accompany the drink, pizzas, "the ideal complement that offers all kinds of pairings", according to Jacobo Lliso, one of its founders. The lower part of their premises is a typical cave in the center of the capital where you can attend tastings or meet other brewers in their classic Meet the brewer. [Echegaray Street, 23]

BE HOPPY.

Halfway between shop and bar, Pepín Rocillo opened in 2014 what many consider to be the temple of craft beer in Madrid.

Initially it was just a store, but after moving to its current location it has several taps to taste beers from all over the world, some of which are impossible to find in another location in Madrid.

Pepín sums up the philosophy that has led him to become a benchmark: "Maximum demand for product quality".

His huge fridge, where all the hoppy beers are kept, is an example of this.

Central Peninsula, the last to arrive

CENTRAL PENINSULA

.

Last to join the central route.

With a factory in Alcobendas, the Madrid brewery wanted a place in the center of Madrid where they could offer their beers.

The neighborhood of letters was the ideal area.

"We wanted to transfer the culture of the factory to the center of Madrid," says Román Jove.

His taps are occupied exclusively by his beers, which can be accompanied by a menu that pays special attention to chicken wings.

Fogg, specializing in beer and cheese

FOGG BAR, BEER&CHEESE

.

One of the first to arrive in the area, José Blasco and his family are in charge of exclusively serving Spanish beer.

A risky bet at first because there were few brands.

"Our philosophy is to have beer from people we know, who we have visited," sums up José.

They accompany it with national cheeses and sausages.

Beer at La Maripepa, musical bar with 14 taps

THE BUTTERFLY

.

In a place that housed one of the oldest karaoke bars in Madrid, this bar run by Antonio Chinaski has reopened and has 14 beer taps of all kinds.

In addition, as it has a music bar license, it offers careful sessions in which a DJ spins vinyl records.

His philosophy is "50% beer, 50% music," says Antonio.

With experience in the restaurant sector, he highlights the "good vibes" that exist with the rest of the specialized bars and predicts that in the near future there may be joint actions.

CLBM Bar Taps

CLBM BAR

. Three friends, lovers of craft beer and with jobs outside of it, decide to transfer their love for this drink from the Como la Birra Misma podcast to a place in the center of Madrid. The result is this bar, specialized in beer and hamburgers that Israel, Rafa and Jorge run together with Marta, the fourth partner. "It's a vocational idea," says Israel, "a project for craft beer to grow." Among its taps you can find from a Pils brought directly from Poland to rarities. One of the latest additions to this craft beer route that, according to Israel, "has nothing to envy" to others like Barcelona. [59 Orchard Street]

MORE THAN BEER

.

With beers ranging from industrial to American craft, it has a wide range and a very varied public: from the lifelong neighbor to the worker who is passing through the area and wants to have a quiet drink at the hotel.

Among the hundreds of beers that it offers there are also wine, gin, whiskey and other distillates.

Third local of the experts in combining tortillas, croquettes and craft beers.

The suc of their owners.
