For three days, from Monday to Wednesday, the Assize Court of Gard in Nîmes will try a 26-year-old man for the murder of a hitchhiker in June 2018. An assassination committed without reason, in addition to the fact that he had always wanted to know what it felt like to kill a human being.

The individual had surrendered himself to the authorities.

It is a rather special trial which opens on Monday before the Assize Court of Gard, in Nîmes.

That of a 26-year-old young man, a priori uneventful, who committed an assassination four years ago, on June 21, 2018, in the region of Sommières (Gard).

He killed a young woman in her thirties.

hitchhiker killed

It is what is called a gratuitous crime, without motive, except that of knowing what it feels like to kill someone, quite simply.

The murderer explained his gesture to the gendarmes like this, "as for a dish, you have to taste it to know if you like it".

His "desires for murder" had existed for several years, he had even spoken about it to his parents, which is also why the examining magistrate retained the premeditation and that he is sent back to the Court of Assizes for "murder".

His victim was all found: a hitchhiker in his thirties whom he takes to his destination.

He dines with her in a pizzeria (this is where he decides to kill her, "a dream opportunity" according to him), then they go for a walk in a remote corner, he takes action.

17 stab wounds

This knife enthusiast had one in his car, just in case.

He used it 17 times against the victim, touching her in the heart, carotid artery and face, "so that death comes as quickly as possible", the young man told the gendarmes.

Once his deed was done, he went home, washed, went to bed.

He surrenders himself to the authorities two days later, "disappointed" at not having felt pleasure in killing.

This is his only regret in this story.

For investigators, the man has the psychological profile of a serial killer: without empathy or emotion.

By his own admission, he could have continued killing if he had liked it.
