A court has sentenced a man in his 30s to two years and six months in prison for using a counterfeit check made using a color copier.

On the 12th, Detective 8 of the Seoul Western District Court (Director Young-Hoon Lee) sentenced A (34), who was arrested and charged with violating the Illegal Check Control Act and using counterfeit securities, to two years and six months in prison and a fine of 5 million won.

Mr. A is accused of duplicating a check in front of a 100,000 won bill on 500 sheets of A4 paper with a color copier and paying a total of 1.2 million won (12 sheets) over 11 times.

In September of last year, Mr. A made a counterfeit check with a borrowed color copier and paid with counterfeit checks several times at motels, convenience stores, and bakeries around the country.

The crime, which lasted for over a week, was caught by a cafe employee in Seoul.

This was because a cafe employee was depositing sales into a bank when he realized it was a counterfeit check and reported it to the police.

The police, who received the report, tracked Mr. A through CCTV analysis and sent Mr. A to the prosecution in October of last year. In the police investigation, Mr. A is known to have stated, "I forged a check because of my living expenses."

The court explained the reason for the sentencing, saying, "The crime of counterfeiting a check is an act that undermines the social trust of the check in front of it and harms the order of the transaction, and requires severe punishment.

However, it added, "The fact that he admits to the crime and repents, and that he grew up in an unfavorable environment, are taken into account as an advantageous normal."
