A new Internet bug could soon take place, with the arrival of version 100 of Google Chrome.

The latest stable browser version is number 96 today. This is not supposed to be a problem, since these software version numbers are meaningless.

But this has an impact on Duda, an online service that is often used for website design, reports 9to5Google relayed by Presse-Citron.

This bug could be similar to that of the year 2000. Disturbances had been recorded, linked to the fact that the computer systems only used the last two digits of the years, 99 for 1999 for example.

With the year 2000, the machines which had not anticipated the problem believed to return in 1900.

Three numbers that pose a problem

A similar problem could occur with version 100 of Google Chrome. In question, the way in which certain sites and services “parse”, or “understand the user agent”. Each browser is identified and a text response tells them how to view Internet pages. Some platforms use a simple code, with the name of the browser, the character “/” and the version number. On Duda, only the two digits after the “/” are recovered. And the new version of Google Chrome will have three.

15,000 agencies are said to use Duda's online service for creating websites.

Other platforms could even be affected.

Chrome is currently looking for a solution, even a temporary one, to avoid a too big bug.

The arrival of Chrome 100 is scheduled for the first half of 2022.
