For several months, the Pegasus affair has put the activities of the Israeli company NSO Group, responsible for the now famous spyware, into difficulty.
An investigation by a media consortium revealed that spy campaigns were carried out by various governments using the Pegasus tool.
Those targeted included journalists, political opponents and businessmen.
In early November, the NSO group was blacklisted by the United States.
The US administration considered the activities of the NSO Group company, maker of the Pegasus spyware, a threat to national security and therefore subjected the company to severe restrictions on exports and imports.
Open letter
In order to apply similar restrictions vis-à-vis the company in Europe, 81 NGOs and 5 experts asked in an open letter to the European Commission to sanction NSO Group and to ban the sale and use of its Pegasus spyware in Europe.
The letter is addressed to the foreign ministers of the European Union.
Among the signatories, we can notably find Amnesty International, Reporters Without Borders and Human Rights Watch.
"The European Union should follow the example of the United States and put [the Israeli company NSO Group] on its sanctions list and take all appropriate measures to prohibit the sale, transfer, import, export and the use of NSO Group technologies as long as appropriate human rights protection measures have not been put in place, ”the letter read.
"Add to growing international pressure" against NSO Group
“The EU should unequivocally close its doors to doing business with NSO Group,” said Deborah Brown, digital rights researcher and advocacy officer at Human Rights Watch.
Targeted sanctions are needed to this end and to add to the growing international pressure against the out-of-control spyware business and industry.
